2023 DP World Tour Championship Trends

Winning score
Since 2015, the winning score has ranged from -15 to -21. We expect a similar figure this week.

Course Form
Eleven of the last twelve winners have had a previous top 10 at the Earth Course. Jon Rahm is the only debutant to win since Robert Karlsson in 2010. Desert form is also preferred.

Incoming Form
Eleven of the last fourteen winners had a top 10 in their previous 3 starts.

Nationality
Thirteen of the last fourteen winners at the Earth Course have been European.  However, Collin Morikawa won in 2021 and there are several non-European golfers with good records in this event so take this trend with a pinch of salt.

Age
Seven of the last eight winners were in their twenties.  Danny Willett was the exception and he was 31.  Youngsters are definitely preferred.

2023 DP World Tour Championship Trends Shortlist

Using the information above, we have taken into account the three most relevant trends to establish a shortlist of potential winners.  The trends used were:

Age: Under 35
Course Form: At least one previous top 10
Recent Form: At least one top 10 in last three starts

The players who meet the above three criteria are:

Rory McIlroy
Jon Rahm
Viktor Hovland
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Tyrrell Hatton
Tommy Fleetwood
Adrian Meronk
Robert MacIntyre
Nicolai Hojgaard
Victor Perez
Alexander Bjork
Rasmus Hojgaard
Matt Wallace
Sami Valimaki
Adrian Otaegui

2023 DP World Tour Championship Stats Analysis

Summary
Strokes Gained stats are available since 2017. One thing they don't show is the importance of driving distance on the Earth Course, so we have included that also.

Driving Distance
Every winner since 2009 has ranked 16th or better for distance. Ten out of those 14 winners were inside the top 10 in this category. It is a big advantage to be a long hitter at the Earth Course.

SG: Off The Tee
The last six winners have ranked 2510-8-4-19-5 (most recent first) in this category. Strong drivers prosper here.

SG: Approach
The last six winners ranked 2-10-35-4-2-10 (most recent first) in this category. Strong iron play is usually required but Matt Fitzpatrick (2020) showed you can win with a great putting week.

SG: Tee To Green
The last six winners ranked 2-3-8-1-6-6 (most recent first) in this category.  As you'd expect, a strong all round game is required to win this week.

SG: Around The Green
The last six winners ranked 2-6-7-4-33-27 (most recent first) in this category. Sharp short game preferred but not essential.

SG: Putting
The last six winners ranked 2-14-1-9-10-9 (most recent first) in this category. Preference is on ball striking for the Earth Course.

2023 DP World Tour Championship In Play Advice

Tough Holes
The par 4 9th hole was once again the toughest last year.  The 4th, 8th and 12th were also once again amongst the hardest on course.

Birdie Holes
The four par 5s (2nd, 7th, 14th and 18th) played as the easiest four holes last year.

Fast or Slow start
The top three after round one last year would all go on to finish inside the top five.  Winner in 2022, Matt Fitzpatrick, was 2nd after round one. The top four in 2019 were all in the top four after 18 holes! The top three in 2018 were all in the top ten after 18 holes. You don't want to be too far behind at the Earth Course. Backing players with hot starts in-play could be advantageous.

2023 DP World Championship Round 3 Summary

Our 60/1 pre-event Matt Wallace stole the headlines with a stunning round of 60, birdieing every hole on the back nine. A slow back nine for Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland, combined with a poor finish from Nicolai Hojgaard means that he takes a one shot lead into the final round.

2023 DP World Championship Round 4 Weather

Sunny. Wind 5-10mph.

Back or Lay The Favourite?

Viktor Hovland shortens for the 3rd day in a row to go 15/8 favourite. Fleetwood threatened on getting a few clear of him today but Hovland was steady as a rock all day and should take the most momentum going into the final round out of the pair. He looks to be the value out of the front three of the betting, with it going to be a tough ask for Wallace to follow up that brilliance.

In-Play DP World Championship Bets We Considered

Chasing has been difficult here over the years but Matt Wallace round of 60 today shows low scores are out there and this has been a very different edition so far. With the quality of the front three though, it's difficult to look past the guys at 13 under par. We considered Nicolai Hojgaard to bounce back at 14/1, he is well capable of going low, however we will likely cheer on 60/1 Wallace in the hope he upsets Hovland and Fleetwood.

2023 DP World Championship Round 1 Summary

French Duo Julien Guerrier and Matthieu Pavon were joined by Nicolai Hojgaard to share the lead. Pre-event favourites Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy struggled to score today and have plenty work to do tomorrow to catch up.

2023 DP World Championship Round 2 Weather

AM scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms then partly sunny PM.  Wind 10-15mph.

Back or Lay The Favourite?

Viktor Hovland is 9/2 favourite and rightly so being a couple of shots ahead of Rory McIlroy and three clear of Jon Rahm. He didn't appear to be too rusty despite a long spell off and we should only expect his scores to improve as the week goes on. He's not a lay for us but there are plenty others who can make their move tomorrow.

In-Play DP World Championship Bets We Considered

Due to the history of elite winners in this event, we're only really concentrating on the 'name' players, expecting them to make their move tomorrow. Robert MacIntyre is one we looked at closely, the Scot has proved he can compete in these high strength DP World Tour fields at the Scottish Open but his tee to green game still isn't where we would like it to be to back at 35/1.
