Betfred British Masters Trends

Winning Score
When the British Masters was held at The Belfry between 2006-2008 the winning scores were -11, -15 and -12.  Rasmus Hojgaard won the ISPS Handa UK Championship in 2020 with a score of -14 and Richard Bland won this event on -14 in 2021, whilst Thorbjorn Olesen won with -10 last year. We can expect a winning score of -10 to -15.

Winning Profile
The world rankings of the three British Masters winners (2006-2008) were 194-48-157.  Hojgaard was 94th when he lifted the trophy at the ISPS Handa UK Championship and Bland was 218th before his win in 2021, whilst Olesen was on the comeback trail in 364th. The last two years have been a perfect venue for experienced players winning.

Correlating Courses
The Portugal Masters offers a number of similarities. Westwood is a winner at the Dom Pedro Victoria golf course, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano had a runner up finish there and Johan Edfors had a solid enough record there too.  It's also notable the 2020 runner up, Justin Walters, has an excellent record at the Portugal Masters.

Course Form
Most players did not play the British Masters between 2006-2008 but 2021 winner, Richard Bland, was 19th at this venue in 2020. None of the 2021 top 5 featured on the leaderboard in 2020. Olesen was 57th the year before he triumphed but did finish 17th in the ISPS Handa UK in 2020 at the Belfry. Some form of course experience appears to be handy.

Recent Form
Olesen arrived with form of 33-23-12 so had been showing signs. Bland had finished 27th in his previous start and Hojgaard had finished 3rd the week before he triumphed.  Of the players who won between 2006-2008, Westwood finished 6th the week before, Fernandez Castano 25th and Edfors 45th.  Recent form does appear to be important.

Betfred British Masters Stats Analysis

SG: Approach
Olesen ranked 11th. Bland ranked 3rd in 2021, whilst runner up Guido Migliozzi was 10th. Rasmus Hojgaard ranked 7th in 2020.  Indeed, three of the first four last year ranked inside the top seven for SG: Approach.  The winners of the last three British Masters (2006-2008) were all accurate iron players too.  We should favour players with good Strokes Gained: Approach stats.

SG: Off The Tee
Olesen ranked 125th, including 148th in accuracy. In 2021, Bland ranked 31st, notably 1st for Driving Accuracy, whilst Migliozzi was 32nd. In 2020, none of the top four ranked inside the top 10 for SG: Off The Tee (they ranked 12-24-45-38 in this category).

SG: Around The Green
It was a similar story around the greens as no player in the top four ranked inside the top 40 in 2020. Bland ranked 61st in 2021 but did rank 1st for Scrambling. Migliozzi was 33rd and 3rd for scrambling. In 2022, Olesen was ranked 67th, but did rank 8th for scrambling.

SG: Putting
Olesen ranked 3rd SG: Putting last year. In 2021, Bland ranked 87th, losing strokes on the greens! The top four in 2020 ranked 2-23-6-11 in this category, so a good putting week certainly helps.

Betfred British Masters In Play Tips

Olesen converted his lead last year but 3rd round leaders have a terrible record in recent times with every 3rd round leader beaten between 2006-2008 and then again in 2020 and in 2021. Edfors won from 4 back, Westwood won from 2 back and Fernandez-Castano came from 3 back between 2006-2008.  In 2020, Rasmus Hojgaard came from five back and Bland came from 3 back in 2021. Opposing the 3rd round leader is a solid strategy.

The last SIX course champions opened with under par first rounds. Olesen opened up with a 66 to lead last year whilst Bland and Migliozzi shared 3rd place after round one last year before dropping back slightly.

2023 Betfred British Masters Round 3 Summary

The lead switched hands many times on what felt more like a DP World Tour Sunday, rather than a moving day. Oliver Wilson, James Morrison, Antoine Rozner and Niklas Moller all held the lead on seperate occasions but none could stay ahead of the field in the end, with an 8 for Rozner on hole 10 curtailing his chances.

Notable Round 3 Betfred British Masters Quotes

"I'm buzzing. I'm absolutely buzzing. I can't wait. I'm not going to lie, I'll probably go have a little beer right now to calm down because literally, the nerves on the last when the putt was going down, I was thinking, 'this could be three-putt'. " Andy Sullivan

"It's feeling great. Getting better day-by-day and I try to manage my golf out there. It's not easy. The wind is strong so you have to manage your game on the best way, not just for trying to make birdie but try to play safe and be happy with a par sometimes. It's good. I'm happy with the way I'm playing and it will be interesting." Guido Migliozzi

"My game is very up and down, I make a lot of birdies, make a lot of bogeys. Just seems to be more consistent this week so far. I didn't know how I was going to feel into this round but I actually felt quite calm out there." Niklas Norgaard

2023 Betfred British Masters Round 4 Weather

Mostly sunny and very windy. Wind gusts to 25mph. Wind gusts 15-20mph.

Back or Lay The Favourite?

Joost Luiten is new favourite following Justin Rose's collapse. Luiten eagled the 17th hole to pole-vault into a share of the lead and he will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of losing the BMW International Open to Thriston Lawrence last week. It has to be said, he was very poor that day and it will be in his head today for sure.

Why Luiten is a point shorter than Guido Migliozzi in the betting is anyone's guess. The Italian is one of the most formidable closers on the DP World Tour, with three wins to his name since 2019, including the French Open last year. He was runner-up in 2021 to Richard Bland and has a great chance of going one better today, in our minds he should be the favourite.

In-Play Betfred British Masters Bets We Considered

We have some great chances today - Migliozzi at 80/1, Walters at 90/1 and Bradbury 125/1 and Bryce Easton Top 20 Finish at 8/1. The later was in our thoughts today at 50/1, only two shots back and has been playing very well tee to green. Robert MacIntyre also looks a fair price at 40/1 however his tee to green figures put us off. There is one player we have advised to subscribers who we prefer to the pair.

2023 Betfred British Masters Round 2 Summary

Justin Rose found things tough today, especially the front nine, where he was four over par through 10 holes. He recovered well to share the lead with Antoine Rozner, who shot the joint lowest round of the day with a 68. The cut was made at one over par and that is only seven shots back, with 79 players making it through to the weekend.

Notable Round 2 Betfred British Masters Quotes

"If I had gone and shot 76 today, I'd have walked off and been quite bewildered because I did not play that badly but the score had slipped away from me after ten holes and that is what it is." Justin Rose

"I think my whole game is good. I don't have any weakness in my game, so I think that helps me just being very consistent week-after-week. " Antoine Rozner

2023 Betfred British Masters Round 3 Weather

Cloudy with scattered early morning showers then becoming partly sunny and very windy in the afternoon. Wind gusts to 25mph. Wind gusts 15-20mph.

Back or Lay The Favourite?

Justin Rose has drifted from 13/8 to 11/4 but we would be less keen to take that price. A lot of strong players have got themselves into contention - Antoine Rozner, Yannik Paul and Thorbjorn Olesen are all experienced winners on tour and the fact 49 players are within 5 shots of the lead is off putting. With the wind set to blow all weekend, anyone could still win this.

In-Play Betfred British Masters Bets We Considered

We considered strong wind players such as Antoine Rozner and Ewen Ferguson, as well as topping up on Guido Migliozzi, who we are already on at 80/1. However two other prices were slightly preferred.

2023 Betfred British Masters Round 1 Summary

Justin Rose shot a 65 in the morning, one better than Jamie Donaldson, and no one was able to match them from the afternoon.

Notable Round 1 Betfred British Masters Quotes

"I felt very comfortable with my game from the first shot, really. Hit a beautiful little wedge into the tenth hole. Got off to a good start, nice birdie there, and I actually think that's probably the best, cleanest round of golf I've played in a long, long time, probably even this year, as well as I have been playing." Justin Rose

"I'm only an hour and ten minutes from home, so it's great to play on British soil. I love it. I've always enjoyed playing on British soil because it's what you're used to, isn't it? It's what you've grown up with and what you're used to. Great coming here and playing here at The Belfry. " Jamie Donaldson

2023 Betfred British Masters Round 2 Weather

Cloudy and breezy at times with scattered light showers and drizzle. Rain likely late in the afternoon and evening. Wind gusts 12-22mph.

Back or Lay The Favourite?

Justin Rose was extremely impressive this morning and showed his class against a mediocre field. A best of price of 13/8 feels very short though, with a tough day ahead for the whole field we would be hesitant to take that price.

In-Play Betfred British Masters Bets We Considered

With Rose looking strong, we are only considering players with each way potential at the moment.
