2023 Canadian Open Course Background

Oakdale Golf and Country Club is a traditional tree-lined classic parkland style course over tumbling land, quietly situated in a populated urban setting. Formed by members of Toronto’s Jewish community, the golf course was originally designed in 1926 by renowned course architect and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame honoured member Stanley Thompson. An additional nine holes were built soon after and a third nine holes opened in 1957 under the vision of Thompson’s protégé and fellow Canadian Golf Hall of Fame honoured member, Robbie Robinson. In 2018, the golf course underwent a major restoration under the guidance of Ian Andrew to bring consistency across the three nines.

The Thompson and Homenuik nines make up the original 18 holes created by Stanley Thompson while the Knudson nine reflects the additional work of Robbie Robinson. Smallish greens dominate the Thompson-Homenuik 18, while slightly larger greens are found on the Robinson nine. The ninth hole on Knudson course will be the historic finishing hole for the championship.

2023 Canadian Open Round 3 Summary

CT Pan grabbed a two shot lead but Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose all put themselves in contention, sitting in tied 2nd place.

Notable Round 3 Canadian Open Quotes

" Really struggled with that part of the game on Thursday. Went and did some practice Thursday afternoon. I got a good feel and yeah, as you said, definitely the approach play over the last couple days has been a lot better. So looking for more of that tomorrow." Rory McIlroy

"I played well the first three rounds. So, course management, I won't do too much to change. But you still have to play aggressive, because this course it's a lot of rough, but if you hit it in the fairway you will have a lot of short irons in and you're going to create a lot of birdie opportunities. So I wouldn't be surprised if someone shoots 8-, 9-under, because the PGA TOUR guys are really good." CT Pan

"Yeah, got a great round going today and you just have to go out and enjoy those days when they come. I drove it great, I put myself in position all day and managed to convert, which is a lovely feeling." Tommy Fleetwood

Back or Fade The Favourite?

Rory McIlroy is a marginal favourite at 3/1 and he is still the man to beat despite being two behind Pan. Rory was 2nd tee to green yesterday which was a big improvement in that department and if he plays similar he will take all the beating. However, the leaderboard is bunched and we are happy to pass on him should he win at that price, just as we were with Tyrrell Hatton yesterday.

In-Play Canadian Open Bets We Considered

We are on Mark Hubbard pre-event at 100/1 so hopeful he can make a challenge today. Aside from that, we considered Nick Taylor who impressed in contention at Phoenix a few months ago and ranked 1st tee to green yesterday. Ultimately though, we are happy to cheer on Hubbard today but this looks a really tough event to call the winner.

2023 Canadian Open Round 2 Summary

Players scored better in the second round at Oakdale, with Tyrrell Hatton shooting a score f 64 to move himself into second place.

Notable Round 2 Canadian Open Quotes

"Definitely played some great golf out there. It was a little rainy in the morning. But I kind of adapted pretty good. I had the exact same mindset as yesterday. Just go out, play freely. Yeah, let the result take care of itself. My caddie and I, we did a great job communicating. He was cheering me on nicely. There's some tight holes he just asked me to swing freely. He said, Don't really worry about where we're trying to hit this ball. Then we just go from there. Which kept me loose and free for the round. Glad that I shoot a good score." Cal Yuan

"I always love Canada. I started my pro career here playing in the Canadian Tour. I finished second. I won twice. And I always love Canada. The people are so nice. My wife loves Lululemon. So, no, just enjoy my time out here. I've had a really couple good scores, I think top 10 awhile ago at the Canadian Open. So just, in general, we love Canada." CT Pan

"There are two pretty different nines. The first nine is pretty difficult. There are some short, a couple of short par-4s, but the middle stretch of holes 3 through until 6 are pretty difficult. I'm sure a lot of things have been saying the same thing. On the back nine you've got a few more chances. There's still some difficult holes sprinkled in there with like the par-3, 11th. 17, a good hole as well. So it's a real mixed bag where you got some scoring opportunities but some difficult holes. But I think the key is to kind of keep it on the fairways. The rough is so thick this week. Just gives you that little bit more control coming into the greens. Because the greens are quite slopey as well. So it's a good challenge, it's a good course and it's in fantastic condition." Aaron Rai

Back or Fade The Favourite?

Tyrrell Hatton is the 4/1 favourite but it's not a price we are considering.  Much like yesterday, the leaderboard remains congested and we don't feel the need to be taking short prices on Hatton.  Thirty players are within four shots of second place and as such we are looking at potential each way value.

In-Play Canadian Open Bets We Considered

Harry Higgs, Nate Lashley and Chesson Hadley all make appeal based on their prices with Unibet but those prices are very much stand out prices and unlikely to last long.

2023 Canadian Open Round 1 Summary

Four morning starters topped the leaderboard on a day where afternoon starters found it tougher in cooler conditions.  There are 83 players at even par or better, within five shots of the lead.

Notable Round 1 Canadian Open Quotes

"The conditions this afternoon kind of turned for the worst. It was cool, little windy, wet. So it definitely showed its teeth there today. I kind of got through that front nine okay. And I kind of figured if I can get through that front around 1-under, even, 1-over, that the back nine was still kind of gettable. So, yeah, had a nice finish out on the back and some good momentum for tomorrow." Mackenzie Hughes

"It's in amazing condition. The fairways are perfect. The greens are rolling very true. The rough is very healthy. So the condition of it is very, very good. I think the course is good too. It's interesting, there were some patches which are scorable. There are other patches which are very difficult. And I think that's part of the nature of this course. But I think the layout is good. Maybe on a couple of holes if the greens were a little flatter in certain spots you could have more pin positions. But other than that I think it's good. It will be a good challenge this week. You've got to play some real solid golf to score and perform well here." Aaron Rai

2023 Canadian Open Round 2 Weather

Light rain showers possible throughout the day (max wind 9mph)

Back or Fade The Favourite?

Corey Conners and Matt Fitzpatrick share favouritism after opening with rounds of 67 and 68 respectively.

Conners topped the SG: Tee to Green stats in round one and gained strokes with the putter. If that combination continues, he's a big threat this week.

Fitzpatrick only hit 46% of fairways in round one and he'll need to improve off the tee if he's to continue his scoring over the next three days.  He recorded a ninth place finish last week at memorial hitting two thirds of fairways so it is expected his driving does improve.

We're not backing either at this stage though.  With so many players within striking distance of the top of the leaderboard, much could change over the next few days.

In-Play Canadian Open Bets We Considered

Mackenzie Hughes was the player we were closest to backing today but he narrowly missed out in favour of two players at bigger prices.  The 35/1 available on Hughes is a fair price and we will certainly be watching him in-play once the action starts.
