Trends
Winning Score
Shaun Norris won with a winning score of -27 last year at The Steyn City Championship.
Stats Analysis
We can analyse the stats of the top four at last year's Steyn City Championship:
SG: Off The Tee
Three of last year's top four ranked inside the top six in SG: Off The Tee. Shaun Norris was the only one who didn't, ranking 53rd in this category.
Driving Distance
Three of last year's top four ranked inside the top six in Driving Distance. Shaun Norris was the only one who didn't, ranking 39th in this category.
Driving Accuracy
Oliver Bekker was the only player in the top four last year to rank inside the top 30 for Driving Accuracy. Accuracy isn't essential when making your Jonsson Workwear Open picks this week.
Greens in Regulation
Shaun Norris and Oliver Bekker were 19th and 20th for Greens In Regulation but Matti Schmid (50th) and Dean Burmester (80th) were well down the rankings.
SG: Approach
A similar story to Greens in Regulation, with Norris and Bekker inside the top 20 but Schmidt (56th) and Burmester (40th) not having a great week with their irons.
SG: Around The Green
Dean Burmester was 2nd in this category but none of the others in the top four ranked inside the top 35 in this category.
SG: Putting
Shaun Norris topped the putting stats with Schmid ranking 14th, Bekker 39th and Burmester 45th.
In Play
Tough Holes
The 18th and 8th holes played as the two hardest holes last year.
Birdie Holes
As ever, the par 5s were inside the five easiest holes last year, along with the short par four 11th hole.
Fast or Slow Start
Last year's winner, Shaun Norris, was 2nd after the opening round. Five of the eventual top seven all shot 68 or better in round one.
Closing stretch
The 18th is a 515 yard par 4 and played as the toughest hole last year.
2022 Player Quotes

2023 Jonsson Workwear Open Round 3 Summary
Alex Knappe shot the second best score of the day to open up a one shot lead going into the final round at Steyn City. However, a bogey on his 17th hole was his only dropped shot in his last two rounds.
Notable Round 3 Jonsson Workwear Open Quotes
"I could have been lower but then on 17 made one bogey - still, I'm a human being, I can't be hard on myself. I had no strategy, to be honest, I just played golf and see how it ended up, and shot seven under which is nice! It will be the first time for me to lead a big event, I will assess my expectations tonight and enjoy the moment for now - it was a great round." Alex Knappe
"I played really nicely today, my iron shots were a lot better than the previous two days. I hit it well off the tee as well and holed a few putts, so basically everything was pretty good. I hit a few poor wedge shots but other than that, flawless. It's been a while since I was bogey-free, so that was nice. It's always fun to be in the mix, so I'm looking forward to it." Joakim Lagergren
2023 Jonsson Workwear Open Round 4 Weather
Potential thunderstorms in the afternoon. Wind 5-10mph.
How do we expect the market favourites to perform?
Alex Knappe takes over from fellow German, Nick Bachem, as 4/1 favourite. Knappe would have led by two strokes going into the final round but for a dropped shot on 17. That bogey was only his second of the week and he's certainly hitting the ball well enough.
Knappe triumphed in South Africa last year, winning the Dimension Data Pro-Am when leading after the third round. He also won the BN-L Challenge Trophy when in second place after 54 holes and has shown himself to be reliable when in contention. We'd expect him to
Gavin Green (5/1), Hennie du Plessis (11/2), Nick Bachem (13/2) and Joakim Lagergren (15/2) aren't separated by much in the betting but none make any appeal. We'd be much more inclined to look at the players in the group at 15 under par or Ockie Strydom at 14 under par.
Where is the value?
We tipped Ockie Strydom to subscribers yesterday and we wouldn't discourage anyone from backing the two time DP World Tour winner at 33/1 ahead of the final round.

2023 Jonsson Workwear Open Round 2 Summary
Low scoring was once again the order of the day at Steyn City as 113 players broke par. Local pair, Martin Vorster and Darren Fichardt lead the way.
Notable Round 2 Jonsson Workwear Open Quotes
"Yesterday I was hitting the ball so bad, I can’t remember when I hit my irons so bad, but I made every pitch close to the hole, every up and down, holed every putt inside four or five metres, so after the round I was pretty shocked about the seven under! Today I felt like I played much better but I didn’t hole all the putts, then on the back nine they went in and it was pretty nice." Nick Bachem
"It was a good round, 64 today, eight under. Yesterday was actually even better on the long game but I just couldn’t make a putt, today the putting was very solid so that made a big difference." Romain Langasque
2023 Jonsson Workwear Open Round 3 Weather
AM periods of rain possible until 10 AM then partly sunny with isolated shower or storm after 1500 hours.. Wind will blow around 10-15mph.
How do we expect the market favourites to perform?
Nick Bachem is 13/2 favourite and it's not a particularly enticing price. The German failed to win on the Challenge Tour last year despite graduating and has a whole host of established winners tucked in behind. Concerns over his poor iron play on Friday returning would also put us off.
Sami Valimaki is next at 7/1 but he was less than convincing when losing the Singapore Open to Ockie Strydom and still hasn't won since the 2020 Oman Open. We expect him to be up there come Sunday but couldn't back him at single figures currently. Romain Langasque has a similar story to Valimaki having not won since the Welsh Open in 2020 and he hasn't been strong in contention since.
Where is the value?
This event is wide open with 20 players within 4 shots. There are plenty of nice prices available in the outright market.

2023 Jonsson Workwear Open Round 1 Summary
Low scoring was once again the order of the day at Steyn City as 113 players broke par. Local pair, Martin Vorster and Darren Fichardt lead the way.
Notable Round 1 Jonsson Workwear Open Quotes
"I didn’t have a great warm-up so my first two holes I was like, ‘just swing easy and try and get it in the fairway and try and get it close to the green’ and I managed to make birdie and then did two good shots in the next hole and that was me, it was just staying consistent the rest of the round." Darren Fichardt
"Really happy with the start, I hit the ball really well today tee to green, gave myself plenty of opportunities and ended up making a few putts, so a very solid start to the tournament." Martin Vorster
2023 Jonsson Workwear Open Round 2 Weather
Light rain showers in the morning. Wind will blow around 8-14mph.
How do we expect the market favourites to perform?
The bookmakers can't separate Joakim Lagergren, Nick Bachem and Niklas Norgaard Moller at the front of the betting, all three priced up at 16/1. That reflects the open nature of this event and with 49 players within four shots of the lead it is all to play for. Bachem and Moller are yet to really prove themselves in contention at this level and of the three, Lagergren would be preferred.
Gavin Green (18/1) is the only other player priced up below 20/1 and he entered our thinking. However, we're still scarred by the way he let the Czech Masters slip through his grasp last year and he's one we'll watch rather than back at this time.
Where is the value?
We aren't looking any further down the leaderboard than those that shot four under par. With a bunched leaderboard, we are looking at a couple of bigger prices. We advised Ewen Ferguson at 45/1 pre-event and he still looks a shade of value, those of you who aren't already on him may wish to get him onside.
