Significant Info

There have been significant changes to the course since 2020, greens have been resurfaced, trees added and bunkers rebuilt.

Be aware that two tournaments were played at this course in 2020 - The Workday Charity Open and The Memorial Tournament.  The course conditions for the 2020 Memorial were markedly different to previous years.

Jon Rahm was SIX shots clear of 2nd place in 2021 when he had to withdraw with Covid.

The Memorial Tournamament Trends

Winning Score
Horschel won by four shots last year on -13. Cantlay won in 2021 with the same score, although Rahm was -18 through 54 holes before withdrawing with Covid.

Jon Rahm won in 2020 with a winning score of -9.  However, we can discount that somewhat given the course was setup firm and fast owing to the fact it was being completely renovated following the tournament.  The seven events held prior to Rahm's win at this course produced winning scores between -13 and -19.

Interestingly, there have been five playoffs in the last nine events held at Muirfield Village.

Course Form
Muirfield Village isn't a course that favours debutants given there have only been two players in the past 14 events held here who won on their debut.

Of the twelve winners who had played here before, all bar one had previously recorded a top 40 finish. Eight had posted a top 20 before winning.

Recent Form
Billy Horschel missed the cut in his prior start at Charles Schwab but had finished 2nd in New Orleans three starts ago. The previous three winners - Patrick Cantlay (2019), Jon Rahm (2020) and Patrick Cantlay (2021) - posted top 30 finishes the start before they won. We would expect this from such top players though.

World Ranking
The winner last year ranked 17th and in 2021 Cantlay was 15th. The winners of the two events played here in 2020 ranked 29th and 2nd prior to their wins.  The six winners prior ranked 14-38-65-102-212-24.  We've therefore seen a mix of winners here, but recent years have seen better players come to the fore.

Nationality
American golfers have won 10 of the last 14 tournaments played here.

The Memorial Tournamament Stats Analysis

SG: Off The Tee
None of the last eight course winners has ranked worse than 32nd for SG: Off The Tee.  Rankings have been 14-3-8-11-13-32-12-26.

SG: Approach
Six of the last eight winners at Muirfield Village have ranked within the top 10 for Strokes Gained: Approach.  Only Horschel last year and DeChambeau in 2018 ranked outside the top 10 SG: Approach (ranking 16th and 24th).  A strong iron player is preferable.

SG: Around The Green
The last eight course winners have ranked 3-3-2-80-5-33-14-50. A strong short game is a big plus around here.

SG: Putting
The last eight course winners have ranked 20-19-32-16-8-9-61-23.  It should also be noted that some awful putters like Emiliano Grillo and Byeong-Hun An have very respectable records here.

The Memorial Tournamament In Play Tips

Tough Holes
The 16th and 18th generally play as the two hardest holes on the course.  Both have averaged over par for the last seven Memorial Tournaments.

Birdie Holes
The par 5's 5th and 7th are the two easiest holes on the course.

Closing Stretch
See Tough Holes!

Fast or Slow Start
Only one winner in the last eight events held at Muirfield Village has been outside the top 20 after Round one (William McGirt (44th) - 2016).

Round 3 leaders don't have the best record in this event despite Billy Horschel winning from the front last year.  Patrick Cantlay came from four back in 2019 and Jason Dufner also won from four back in 2017.  David Lingmerth came from three shots back in 2015 and Hideki Matsuyama trailed by two in 2014.  Collin Morikawa, winner of the 2020 Workday Charity Open, came from three back.

2023 Memorial Tournament Round 3 Summary

It was an eventful third round as the favourites stumbled. First Patrick Cantlay recorded a double bogey and Hideki Matsuyama followed suit, having reached 9 under par through two holes. Our 55/1 pre-event pick Si Woo Kim managed to get a share of the lead despite TWO double bogeys, but he will have to fend off Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland today who climbed the leaderboard with solid rounds.

Notable Round 3 Memorial Tournament Championship Quotes

"Felt like I have hit the ball pretty well this week. The big thing for me around here with how penal it is off the tee is just getting the ball in play. So throttling back, hitting a lot of 3-woods, irons off tees. Using the driver sort of sporadically. That's been the game plan and that's what's really worked over the last three days." Rory McIlroy

"Yeah, I was three behind at Sony, so especially I think I'm one back right now, so, yeah, always like behind and playing like always no pressure. Like nothing much. So, yeah, I like to be like one back or whatever." Si Woo Kim

Back or Fade The Favourite?

McIlroy is now 14/5 favourite and we are happy to take him on today. Every day we have seen the favourites struggle so far, Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay and Hideki Matsuyama have all struggled and we see no reason why Rory won't have his own problems tomorrow. McIlroy was bailed out by a terrific short game yesterday and in fact lost strokes on approach. With this event so wide open, he looks worth opposing at the price.

In-Play Memorial Tournament Bets We Considered

Round 3 leaders don't have the best record in this event despite Billy Horschel winning from the front last year.  Patrick Cantlay came from four back in 2019 and Jason Dufner also won from four back in 2017.  David Lingmerth came from three shots back in 2015 and Hideki Matsuyama trailed by two in 2014.  Collin Morikawa, winner of the 2020 Workday Charity Open, came from three back.

Anyone under par can still win this and for that reason we are hesitant to take a single figure price, despite Viktor Hovland making some appeal at 17/2. We are in a fortunate position of having Si Woo Kim at 55/1 pre-event and his game looks in great shape to get over the line.

With the lottery nature of this leaderboard, we are going to play a couple further down the odds.

2023 Memorial Tournament Round 2 Summary

Justin Suh has taken over at the top of the leaderboard, dropping only a single stroke on his way to a round of 66 and a halfway total of eight under par.

Notable Round 2 Memorial Tournament Championship Quotes

"I would take that 6-under any day. In the beginning I made, on the first hole I made a 12-footer for par on the fringe. I just kind of kept the confidence with the putter going. I thought off the tee I didn't do so great, kind of missing fairways with the driver early. But here, you don't hit too many drivers. You hit a lot of irons off the tee, hit a lot of 3-woods off the tee. So I thought those I did well. But hopefully I can clean up the driver on the weekend." Justin Suh

"Conditions on the golf course were much harder than yesterday morning, obviously. But when it comes to my game, somewhat similar. I feel really comfortable tee to green all day. Hit a lot of good putts that just didn't go in. But I always like to think that things usually even out and we kind of guessed the wind very well on 16 and made three really good putts on 15, 17, and 18 to kind of post a really good score. So at the end of the day, it evens out." Jon Rahm

Back or Fade The Favourite?

Patrick Cantlay has taken over favouritism after his round of 67.  A two two time winner at Muirfield Village, he leads the SG: Tee to Green stats so far this week.

However, bookmakers have priced Cantlay up at 7/2 and that makes very little appeal to us given the quality that surrounds him on the leaderboard.  Cantlay could well win from here but we aren't backing at 7/2,

In-Play Memorial Tournament Bets We Considered

The last five winners of this event have all been inside the top five at halfway and we aren't looking too far down the leaderboard given the quality of players that are in and around the top five.

Jon Rahm has eased out to 13/2 in the betting and that made definite appeal.  The world number two ranks 4th SG: tee to Green this week and whilst it hasn't quite happened for him on the greens so far, that could easily turn around over the weekend.

Sepp Straka also remains a big price and continues to be disrespected in the market.  We advised him at 175/1 at the start of the event and if you aren't on already, the 60/1 available is more than fair.

Tom Hoge was under consideration for a top 20 finish at 11/5.  Hoge is 2nd in SG: Approach so far this week, has a 13th place finish in his locker previously at this venue and is currently in 22nd place.

2023 Memorial Tournament Round 1 Summary

Three birdies in his last four holes saw Davis Riley top the leaderboard after the opening round of the Memorial Tournament.  Riley held a share of the lead last year before going on to finish 13th.

Notable Round 1 Memorial Tournament Championship Quotes

"I hit a really hard reset at the beginning of this week and said to my caddie James -- he helped me out a lot with that and he's like, look, you just need to keep doing your thing, good golf is right around the corner. I know it's weird saying that when you win, six, seven weeks ago, but it's just one of those things to try to kind of get that consistency part, I feel like I need to be a little easier on myself and just keep playing my golf." Davis Riley

"I think it's pretty similar to what it was on Thursday of 2020. It was a significant jump from Friday to Thursday -- to Saturday. That was the biggest jump we saw. But, yeah, fairways are firm, greens are firm. Obviously they didn't really care if they lost 'em so towards the weekend they got a little bit out of hand. But, yeah, quite good memories from that week. Even though it's a, for the most part a different golf course now, it's playing somewhat similar." Jon Rahm

2023 Memorial Tournament Round 2 Weather

Sunny with a moderate breeze (max wind 9mph)

Back or Fade The Favourite?

Jon Rahm is the 5/1 favourite after opening with a three under par round of 70.  It's hard to build a case against the Spaniard given his excellent course record and the fact he ranked 2nd in SG: Off The Tee and 4th SG: Tee to Green.

If we are looking for a negative, it would be the fact that he plays his second round in the afternoon and the wind will be slightly stronger and the course a little firmer.

Overall, Rahm is still a potential back rather than a fade.

In-Play Memorial Tournament Bets We Considered

We were very close to topping up on Sepp Straka at 100/1, having advised him to subscribers at 175/1 before the start of the tournament.  The Austrian has a morning tee time and ranked 9th SG: Approach in round one.

Rahm and Cantlay are a definite worry and with that in mind we are advising two 200/1+ selections to subscribers with half an eye on the each way places.

David Lipsky to lead after the second round was another bet we considered.  Lipsky has a morning tee time in round two and is only two shots off the lead.  However, we wanted a slightly bigger price than 28/1.

Davis Riley appears to be the stand out price amongst the three balls, chalked up at 8/5 to beat Lucas Herbert and Brandt Snedeker.  Herbert had a very poor day on the greens yesterday and will undoubtedly improve but Riley is overly big in what appears to be a two horse race.
