Open Championship Betting Trends

Winning Score
The last two Open Championships at Royal Troon have had winning scores of -20 and -10.  The weather is often the biggest factor in determining the winning score at Open Championships.

Correlating Courses
Links form is essential so consider form at other links events such as the Alfred Dunhill Links, Scottish Open and Irish Open (when a links course has been used).

Event Form
Of the last 18 Open Champions, 15 had recorded at least a top-9 finish at a previous Open before winning.  Furthermore, ten of the last twelve champions had made at least 4 appearances at The Open prior to winning.  Look for a player with proven Open experience.

Recent Form
Eleven of the previous fifteen winners had recorded a top 20 in their previous two events.

Nationality
An eclectic range of nationalities have won the Open in recent times. with no particular nationality dominating.

Age
Only five of the last 15 Open winners were below 30.  Experience counts for a lot and patience is a key requirement.

Major Virgins
Seven of the last thirteen Open winners were winning their first Major.

Debutants
Only three players have won The Open on their debut in the last 47 years.  None of those winners came at Royal Troon.  Ben Curtis and Collin Morikawa won at Royal St George's in 2003 and 2021.  Tom Watson triumphed at Carnoustie in 1975 on his debut.

Prior Year Performance
Despite the strong trend for winners to have posted a top 10 at previous Opens, of the last fourteen winners, seven missed the cut the previous year.  In fact, Brian Harman last year was the only winner in the past 13 years has posted a top 25 at The Open the year before they won.

Current Year Momentum
Nine of the last 13 Open champions had won an event in their previous eight starts.  Do not underestimate the importance of momentum.

World Ranking
In the last 23 years there have only been five winners of the Open Championship outside the world's top-50.

2024 Open Championship Stats Analysis

We look at the stats for the last two winners of The Open at Royal Troon.

Driving Distance
11-10. Distance is rewarding around Troon, especially on the back nine.

Driving Accuracy
5-25. Staying out of the pot bunkers and thick rough is also helpful!

Greens in Regulation
1-19. As always, hitting greens goes a long way.

Putts Per GIR
2-14. Same with putting.

2024 Open Championship In Play Advice

Fast or Slow Start
Every Open champion in the past 23 years has been within 5 shots after the first round.  When the Open was last played here in 2016, Stenson was 5 behind first round leader Phil Mickelson, who went on to finish 2nd.

Just as it is important to be within touching distance after round 1, it is essential to keep pace at the Open as 80% of Open Champions in the past 50 years have been inside the top-10 at the halfway stage.  When the Open was played here in 2016, Mickelson was one ahead of Stenson.

Over 75% of Open Championship winners in the past 20 years have been within 3 shots with one round to go.

2024 Open Championship Round 3 Conditions

A calmer morning before the wind and rain arrived and it was a proper graft for the afternoon starters.

2024 Open Championship Round 4 Weather Bias?

Dry and consistent wind of around 14mph. There may be some rain arriving at around 6pm which the leaders will have to deal with.

Round 4 Outright Market Summary

Shane Lowry's collapse has opened the door for everyone and it's a really tough one to call now. Xander Schauffele is narrow favourite over Scottie Scheffler and leader Billy Horschel, ranging from 7/2 to 11/2. Justin Rose, Sam Burns and Russell Henley are all single figures too. Those six are clearly the favourites but we don't think anyone as far back as +1 should be ruled out and there are some attractive prices around for the guys at Level par and one over par.

With that said though, over 75% of Open Championship winners in the past 20 years have been within 3 shots with one round to go, and given Schauffele and Scheffler are present, it will take a great round to topple them.

2024 Open Championship Round 2 Conditions

A calmer morning before the wind picked up, making life tough for the afternoon starters.

2024 Open Championship Round 3 Weather Bias?

The leaders will have slightly tougher conditions with the rain set to arrive just as they tee off. The wind should be consistent throughout the day though.

Round 3 Outright Market Summary

Shane Lowry has moved into 2/1 favourite despite making a double bogey on the 11th hole. He played the final two holes in two under par and takes good momentum into the weekend. Scheffler is five behind him but has shortened to 15/4, which looks short given the work he has to do. Lowry should prefer playing in the rain tomorrow.

Justin Rose has also entered the conversation and he may be the value out of the three at 7/1. Rose won at Pebble Beach last year in similar conditions and has been making few mistakes with only one bogey in 36 holes. American Ryder cup friends Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay lurk six behind Lowry but look a tad short at 11/1 and 18/1 respectively.  Our subscribers are on Cantlay at 50/1 pre-event so we are hopeful he can kick on.

2024 Open Championship Round 1 Conditions

Rain in the morning and windy early afternoon before conditions calming down early evening.

2024 Open Championship Round 2 Weather Bias?

The morning will begin with light winds and rain before drying up with a stronger wind in the afternoon. Preference would be a very early or very late tee time tomorrow.

Round 2 Outright Market Summary

Scottie Scheffler remains favourite at 4/1 but Shane Lowry has been the big mover into 5/1. He is four shots ahead of Scheffler and the forecast certainly plays into his hands this week with wind or rain due every day. Both have favourable tee times tomorrow but we could still see a lot of movement in the leaderboard due to the volatility of the course and weather.

Eye Catching Niche Market Prices
