2025 Ryder Cup Stats Analysis
Overall Record
Since continental European players became part of the Ryder Cup, Europe have edged proceedings with an 12-9 record (one match has been tied in that time). Europe have won eight of the last eleven encounters.
World Rankings
Team USA have an average world ranking of 11.4 (it was 12.9 in 2023 and 8.9 in 2021). By contrast, the average world ranking of the European Team is 23.4 (it was 30 in 2021 and 2023). World rankings have increasingly been affected by LIV players not receiving world ranking points though.
Rookies
There are four USA Ryder Cup rookies: Russell Henley, JJ Spaun, Ben Griffin and Cameron Young.
Europe have one Ryder Cup rookie: Rasmus Hojgaard.
Foursomes
2023: Europe 7 - 1 USA
2021: USA 6 - 2 Europe
2018: Europe 6 - 2 USA
2016: USA 5.5 - 2.5 Europe
2014: Europe 7 - 1 USA
2012: USA 5 - 3 Europe
2010: Europe 4.5 - 3.5 USA
2008: USA 4.5 - 3.5 Europe
Home advantage counts for a lot in foursomes. The home team has triumphed in the past eight Ryder Cups.
Fourballs
2023: Europe 3.5 - 4.5 USA
2021: USA 5 - 3 Europe
2018: Europe 4 - 4 USA
2016: USA 4 - 4 Europe
2014: Europe 3 - 5 USA
2012: USA 5 - 3 Europe
2010: Europe 4 - 4 USA
2008: USA 4.5 - 3.5 Europe
It's been incredibly close in fourballs in recent times but it's notable that Europe haven't come out on top in this format in the last eight events. America have won nine of the last 13 fourball sessions.
Singles
2023: Europe 6 - 6 USA
2021: USA 8 - 4 Europe
2018: Europe 7.5 - 4.5 USA
2016: USA 7.5 - 4.5 Europe
2014: Europe 6.5 - 5.5 USA
2012: USA 3.5 - 8.5 Europe
2010: Europe 5 - 7 USA
2008: USA 4.5 - 7.5 Europe
The last five singles have been won or drawn by the home team (four wins and a draw in 2023). The three prior to that were won by the away team.
Player Analysis (USA)
Justin Thomas
JT is making his fourth Ryder Cup appearance. Top scorer for the American team in Paris in 2018 (4 points) and top scorer for the USA at the 2019 Presidents Cup (3.5 points), he was also 2nd top points scorer at the 2022 year's Presidents Cup. However, only 1.5 points from 4 matches in the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Cameron Young
Ryder Cup debutant who will enjoy strong support given his connection to the area. Only managed 1.5 points from 4 points in his 2022 Presidents Cup debut and it remains to be seen how well his putting holds up under pressure.
Patrick Cantlay
Cantlay has shown himself to be a formidable matchplay opponent, especially when paired with close friend Xander Schauffele. Joint second top scorer at the last two Ryder Cups (he was undefeated in 2021), he was also joint 2nd top scorer for the Americans at the 2019 Presidents Cup (3 points) and joint top scorer last year's Presidents Cup (4 points). Played with Xander Schauffele in three of four sessions at that Presidents Cup and looks likely to partner him again.
Russell Henley
World number four, he often slips under the radar but his consistent tee to green game will be a huge asset for team USA. Three points from four games at the 2024 Presidents Cup suggest he'll go well on his Ryder Cup debut.
Bryson DeChambeau
Returns to the USA team after missing out in 2023. Often a divisive figure due to his personality and eccentricities, he's a formidable matchplay opponent given he's a past US Amateur winner and scored 2.5 points out of three on his Ryder Cup debut in 2021.
JJ Spaun
Enjoyed a career season to make his way on to the USA team this time aound. Winner of the US Open, he's lacking in matchplay experience other than making the last 16 of the WGC Matchplay in 2016.
Harris English
Returns to the Ryder Cup for the second time and will be hoping to fare better than his last appearance. Only one point from three matches last time out. Most notable fact about that performance was the fact he was forced to change his putter grip before his singles match with Lee Westwood.
Xander Schauffele
Three points from five matches at the 2019 Presidents Cup and has followed that up with three points from four matches at the 2021 Ryder Cup and 2022 Presidents Cup. Only won one point at the last Ryder Cup but impressed once again at last year's Presidents Cup with four points from five games. Level headed and calm (often described as older than his years), he'll likely partner Cantlay in the pairs matches.
Scottie Scheffler
It seems somewhat unbelievable but this time four years ago Scheffler was yet to win on the PGA Tour. This year he comes in as undisputed world number one and the man the USA will look to to lead their challenge. Scheffler has had contrasting fortunes when representing the USA so far, scoring 2.5pts from a possible three at the 2021 Ryder Cup, one point in 2023 and only managing a solitary half from four games at the 2022 Presidents Cup. However, his WGC Matchplay form was exceptional and he scored three points from five at the 2024 Presidents Cup.
Collin Morikawa
Two time major winner who made his debut in 2021, taking 3.5 points from his four matches. Only took 4.5 points from his nine WGC Matchplay group games when the WGC Matchplay was part of the schedule and one point from four matches at the 2023 Ryder Cup. However, he did win all four of his games at the 2017 Walker Cup and took four points from five games at the Presidents Cup in 2024.
Sam Burns
Winner of the WGC Matchplay in 2023, he also went undefeated at the 2024 Presidents Cup. However, one point from five matches at the 2022 Presidents Cup and one point from three matches at the last Ryder Cup suggest he's not unbeatable in this format.
Ben Griffin
Like JJ Spaun, also had a career season to catapult himself up to world number 13. Making Ryder Cup debut just over three years since he graduated from the Korn Ferry Tour. Little Matchplay experience.
Player Analysis (Europe)
Jon Rahm
Former world number 1 will have to be at his best to give the Europeans any chance. One point from three matches in Paris was a poor return but top scored for Europe at the 2021 Ryder Cup and securd three points from four matches in 2023.
Viktor Hovland
The Norwegian has a mixed Ryder Cup record to date. A disappointing Ryder Cup debut in 2021 with only one point from five games. However, followed that up with 3.5 points from five games in 2023. Possesses an un uninspiring WGC Matchplay record (won four and lost five) but we should remember he won the 2018 US Amateur in impressive fashion.
Tommy Fleetwood
Finally broke his PGA tour winless streak with a win at the Tour Championship last month. One half of the successful Moliwood partnership from 2018, Tommy wasn't able to repeat those heroics in Wisconsin (1 point from 3 matches). However, bounced back with three points out of four in Rome. A versatile player who would make a good partner for most within the team.
Rory McIlroy
Former world number 1 who will be expected to lead Team Europe. One point from four matches at the 2021 Ryder Cup left him in tears and he'll be determined not to let that happen again. Eighteen points from 35 matches is an acceptable return.
Rasmus Hojgaard
Only change from the victorious European Team in 2023, Rasmus replaces his brother Nicolai. Secured an automatic place in the team with two runner up finishes in his last four starts but unlikley to see much action before the singles.
Justin Rose
Didn't play in 2021 but finds himself as the second most experienced European behind Rory McIlroy in terms of Ryder Cup appearances. Rose has taken 15.5 points from 26 matches at previous Ryder Cups and will likely be a player that Luke Donald relies heavily upon in the foursomes.
Sepp Straka
Two wins on the PGA Tour this year meant that Luke Donald was once again unable to ignore the Austrian as a captain's pick. One win and five defeats at the WGC Matchplay in his two appearances and one point from three games at the 2023 Ryder Cup doesn't bode well though.
Robert MacIntyre
Secured 2.5 points from three matches on his Ryder Cup debut last time and big wins at the Scottish Open and Canadian Open mean he will be a pivotal part of the European team this time around.
Shane Lowry
The 2019 Open Champion relied upon a captain's pick to make the team and was perhaps slightly fortunate given his weak matchplay record. One point taken from three games on his Ryder Cup debut in Wisconsin wasn't great, nor was 1.5 points from three games at the last Ryder Cup in Rome. A weak record at the WGC Matchplay (won 4, halved 2 and lost 9) isn't overly encouraging either. However, did record an 8th place finish when Bethpage Black was used for the 2019 PGA Championship.
Tyrrell Hatton
Six points from eleven Ryder Cup matches for the volatile Englishman. Hatton improved his record considerably when securing 3.5 points from four games in Rome. Also possesses a reasonable record at the WGC Matchplay. Between 2017-2019 he progressed from his group twice and on the other occasion lost out in a sudden death playoff. Also topped his Matchplay group in 2022 before losing all three games in 2023.
Matt Fitzpatrick
Matt secured his first ever Ryder Cup point last time out in 2023 but his overall Ryder Cup record is poor with seven losses from eight matches. Eight wins and ten defeats from his last 18 matches at the WGC Matchplay suggest he's probably better suited to strokeplay. However, took three points from three matches at the 2013 Walker Cup.
Ludvig Aberg
Two points from four matches at the Ryder Cup when making his debut. He will once again be relied upon heavily with his solid tee to green game.
Bethpage Black Quotes
"It should be a good golf course for me. I think this golf course is -- it's interesting, guys that are up there in strokes gained off the tee often don't hit as many fairways as you might expect. I think this week you're going to have to hit fairways. I don't think you can get away with hitting six a round; I think you're going to have to hit nine a round to be competitive. That normally is in my wheelhouse. I should be hitting north of 60 percent I would say.......this golf course demands that you kind of get down there as far as you can. Because I think there's so many uphill second shots that you need a shorter club, you need loft to come into the greens." Justin Rose, 2019
" I'd say I've played well on courses like this. You know, it's very much so a total driving sort of stat course, I think, accuracy plus distance. I feel like that's something I've done well in the past, so if I sort of not get in my own way and do my thing, I think we should have a pretty solid week......It reminds me a bit of Torrey every once in a while. Obviously there's no water out here, but just the nastiness of the rough, and you get to your ball after you -- the thing about Torrey and here, you can hit two yards off the fairway and have 215 yards to the pin and start laughing because you have a sand wedge in your hand. That's sort of a similarity that I've drawn from the two properties." Xander Schauffele, 2019
"You have to hit the ball in the fairway. I think that's a big stat. I think driving accuracy is going to be -- obviously you still need to get it out there, but at the same time you're going to give yourself a much better chance playing from these fairways because it is playing long, and if you start to miss these fairways you're not going to be able to get to the greens out of the rough with a 4- or 5-iron. I think fairways are very much a premium this week." Rory McIlroy, 2019
"You know, you've got to drive it good, and then there's enough, I'll call them position holes, where you've got to be in the right position off the tees, and there will be some 3-woods, 5-woods, and then the course is able to be set up in ways like we saw in '09 with No. 6 and No. 18. You can move the tees up and give guys options. You do have to drive it really well around here, but you've got to iron it good, chip and putt good and all that stuff, and with it soft like this, and probably going to be soft the first few days, there will be a lot of long clubs in, so it will be a lot of advantage if you're striking your irons well, especially your long irons." Lucas Glover, 2019
