2022 Steyn City Championship

19 March 2022, 9:35pm (UK time)

Norris -23
Burmester -19
Schmid -18
Hansen -17
Soderberg -17

As suggested in yesterday's blog, Shaun Norris and Dean Burmester are heading the leaderboard ahead of round four, with Norris taking a four shot lead over Burmester.

Norris' putter has been red hot all week and it remains to be seen whether he can maintain that with the final day pressure. He ranks 3rd for putting average for the season so it is unlikely to completely falter.

Burmester rolled the flat stick even better today, with only 25 strokes needed on the greens. He is the man who Norris will be looking over his shoulder but we have doubts whether he can continue that putting excellence.

Matti Schmid produced the round of the day with a 64 and it could have been a lot better had he not found the water on 11 for a bogey. He is young and fearless and with nothing to lose and is a danger from off the pace at 12/1.

Round 4 Bet

  • 1pt JB Hansen Win Only 22/1 @ Skybet

With Norris and Burmester appearing to be heavily reliant on the putter today, we are prepared to roll the dice on a two time DP World Tour winner who has experience winning low scoring events. Hansen has won in South Africa before and looks most likely to take advantage of an average performance from the leaders.

Burmester -13
Three players tied -12

Another day of low scores on South Africa which saw Shaun Norris take a three shot lead with a blemish free 62. He is now available at 6/5 to convert.

We spoke yesterday about Norris having the 'nappy factor' and it translated to a score which in truth could have been lower. He looks extremely relaxed and it was only last October he won by four in Japan for his 9th career win.

He has still not managed to win on the DP World Tour but there is no doubt he has the class to finish the job here and we wouldn't want to take him on.

The one man who has a realistic chance of beating him despite the poor finish is Dean Burmester (5/1) who is five back. The power hitter was -8 through 11 holes but the birdies dried up on the back nine. The wide fairways are allowing Burmester the chance to be aggressive with his driver, leaving short irons in and if he continues to putt well he should be the leader's nearest challenger.

A quick word about how impressive Du Preez was this morning. Hopefully some of you took the massive 50/1 on the Betfair Exchange yesterday which looked in great shape until Norris passed him. It could serve him well playing without the pressure of leading and he's impressed us with his attitude on and off the course this week. If it wasn't for Norris and Burmester's calibre at the front of the market we would be tempted to back him at 12/1 but they may have too much for him this time.

Round 3 Bet

  • No Bet

Without doing James Hart Du Preez, JB Hansen or Oliver Bekker a disservice, it's quite hard to see past the front two in the betting for now and we will sit this round out and watch how round three plays out.

Du Preez -9

Five players tied -7

Similar to last week, birdies were the order of the day in South Africa and big hitting leader James Hart Du Preez threatened a 59 at one point before settling for a 63 with a bogey-bogey finish!

He is still available at 28/1 which seems about right but at the time of writing he is 50/1 on the Betfair Exchange which is good value given his ability to overpower the course.

The quartet of George Coetzee, Romain Langasque, Shaun Norris and Dean Burmester are all between 9/1 and 12/1 and are the men to beat as it stands.

Out of the four, Coetzee has the chance to set the clubhouse target in the morning. If he can keep the putter rolling like he did today it's likely he will be in contention come Sunday.

Norris has to be regarded as a threat, particularly as he has the 'nappy factor' after his child was born two weeks ago. However given the way last week played out, it is easy to see a similar scenario where players can catch up from plenty back.

It was noticeable the wind picked up in the afternoon yesterday and slight preference is given to the early starters tomorrow. We will add one play who impressed.

Round 2 Bet

  • 0.5pts Each Way Sami Valimaki 150/1 @ Boylesports (1/4 1-5)

Sami has been off the boil recently but a bogey free 67, combined with ranking 1st for approach play after day one means he is worth a nibble at 150/1. It is a risky play as he hasn't put four rounds together for some time but this time last year he was in the world's top 100 so let's take our chances on Sami regaining his magic touch this week.
