- In 2017 the Classic course was redesigned. It features over 250 bunkers, a number of waste bunker canyons and some greens which have three or more tiers!
Trends
Winning score
When Laguna National (Classic) hosted the 2015 World Classic Championship only two players broke par! The cut was made at +7. The scores shouldn't have come as a surprise given it is a course billed as "Asia's toughest test."
Winning Nationality
The six Singapore Masters held at Laguna National between 2002-2007 yielded four Asian winners. Those players with course experience may have an advantage this week and you may want to factor that into your Singapore Classic picks.
Stats Analysis
We don't have any stats from the 2015 World Classic Championship but we can take a look at the season long statistics for the top four on the leaderboard for that event.
Driving Distance
Of the top four, only third placed Jeunghun Wang (26th) ranked inside the top 45 for the 2015 season for Driving Distance. Winner and runner up, Danthai Boonma and Nicholas Fung, were 74th and 76th for the season in this category.
Driving Accuracy
Nicholas Fung was the only player out of the top four at the 2015 World Classic Championship to finish inside the top 40 for the 2015 season in Driving Accuracy. Winner, Danthai Boonma, was 74th.
Greens in Regulation
Boonma and Fung ranked outside the top 110 for the year in Greens in Regulation! Fourth placed Sam Brazel ranked 21st for the year in this category and Jeunghun Wang ranked 63rd.
Scrambling
Interestingly, the winner, Danthai Boonma ranked 134th in this category. However, the rest of the top four all ranked 42nd or better for the year.
Laguna National Player Quotes
The following are quotes relating to the Masters course. However, several are useful in terms of humidity and potential wind conditions. We will update with quotes relating to the Classic course when these become available.
“I think this is a very good course. It was so different today after the wind on the two practice days. Today was playing shorter. It was playing good for scoring. If the wind picks up scores won’t be as low.” Carlos Rodiles, 2002
“I have to say that the heat eventually got to me a little bit,” he said. “I felt a little bit tired towards the end and it was tough.” Ernie Els, 2003
"It is blustery out there and that is the only thing that is really keeping you cool......The course is tough because if you miss a fairway or a green, you are in trouble.” Mark Foster, 2005
The following are quotes relating to the Classic course.
"Very narrow fairways and Just have to play solid tee shot. If you're good off the tee you'll be great this week I think." Haotong Li, 2023

2023 Singapore Classic Round 3 Summary
The lead switched hands several times in round three and the wind during the back nine caused problems. Alejandro Del Rey and Jeunghun Wang share the lead, one ahead of Richard Mansell.
Notable Round 3 Singapore Classic Quotes
"I think I played really well today and the last two days as well. I changed my putter two weeks ago and that has worked really well. I think that’s the reason I’ve played so well." Jeunghun Wang
"It’s a place that suits me pretty well and it’s about dropping the putts." Alejandro Del Rey
2023 Singapore Classic Round 4 Weather
Variable clouds with a good chance for scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Play has been moved forward by an hour to avoid the bad weather. Wind 5-12mph.
How do we expect the market favourites to perform?
Our 125/1 pre-event pick Jeunghun Wang is now 7/2 favourite Wang will have to fight severe contention rust on the DP World Tour, having only played six events since his two year break from golf serving his country in the military. He has performed nicely in round four in the International Series at the end of last year with rounds of 64 and 67 but there is far more pressure on this. The last time he led on tour was the 2017 Qatar Masters where he won with a 71 and he is quite rightly favourite despite the rust.
Alejandro Del Rey has no real experience contending on the DP World Tour but did convert a Challenge Tour event last year when leading after round three. It's a big ask for him to win on the DP Tour with his first proper chance but he finished his round well today and has a bit of a free hit as a 5/1 chance. Wang would be preferred out of the two leaders though.
Richard Mansell is the dangerman one back and is actually shorter than Del Rey at 24/5. Mansell has had several chances to win a DP World Tour title and certainly has more recent experience in-contention. However, he has been very poor in the mix, with rounds of 74 and 76 the last two times he has been in the top five after round three. He may feel like his time is due, but offers no value at the price.
Where is the value?
This leaderboard has the potential for a shock winner from off the pace and we wouldn't put you off backing a few of the players at 9 and 10 under par.

2023 Singapore Classic Round 2 Summary
Heavy rain caused play to get suspended and as a reult they were unable to finish round two. Tom McKibbin maintained his lead but has been joined by amatuer Wenyi Ding who has four holes to complete. 30 players are within five shots of the lead so it is still all to play for.
Notable Round 2 Singapore Classic Quotes
"I played very nicely most of the day, especially the front nine. A little bit colder on the back, overall a pretty good day." Tom McKibbin
2023 Singapore Classic Round 3 Weather
Partly sunny and breezy at times with a chance for scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Wind 8-12mph.
How do we expect the market favourites to perform?
This event is wide open now and nothing shows that more than the current market. McKibbin is favourite at 9/1 but TWELVE players are 22/1 or less. McKibbin had chance to really kick on but played his last 10 holes in one over par, we expect him to be overtaken in round three.
Where is the value?
It's easy to see the 54-hole leaderboard looking very different but it's a hard event to call at the moment. We have plenty of pre-event interest so happy to leave alone for now.

2023 Singapore Classic Round 1 Summary
Graduate Tom Mckibbin grabbed the lead in the morning and nobody was able to match him. Fellow graduate Simon Forsstrom shot the best round of the afternoon starters, 7 of the top 8 were early starters. We are off to a strong start with 125/1 Joachim Lagergren in 6th and 125/1 Jeunghun Wang in 9th.
Notable Round 1 Singapore Classic Quotes
"I played nicely last week, a few bad holes here and there, so it’s nice to continue that nice form I had last week." Tom McKibbin
2023 Singapore Classic Round 2 Weather
Variable clouds with a slight chance for a late afternoon thunderstorm. Wind 8-12mph.
How do we expect the market favourites to perform?
One of the pre-event favourites, Jordan Smith, is top of the market at 9/1 and is only three back of McKibbin. Smith found some momentum towards the end of his round with four birdies in his last six holes and we expect him to carry that into tomorrow.
Antoine Rozner is on the same score and looked in control tee to green. He let two good birdie chances slip in his last two holes and a winner as recently as December, he too should be expected to push on.
Both are preferred to Tom Mckibbin and Sami Valimaki at around 11/1 who will have tougher scoring conditions in the afternoon. Valimaki often throws in a poor round after a low one, whilst this will be new feeling for McKibbin leading on the DP World Tour.
Where is the value?
With 7 of the top 8 playing in the morning today, and the wind due to slightly increase tomorrow, morning starters are preferred.
