Stats Analysis

With no previous events to analyse, we make no stats comparisons.

In Play

Tough Holes
The 6th and 18th play as the toughest holes on the scorecard.  It's likely they play the 10th hole as a par 4 (it is a par 5 for members) so this may prove challenging too.

Birdie Holes
The 4th hole and the par 5s will offer plenty of birdie opportunities.

Fast or Slow Start
The course has only been used for Big Easy Tour events so far.  These events are only three rounds and as you'd expect, it has been necessary to make a fast start.

Closing stretch
The 17th is a 200+ yard par 3 and the 18th hole is stroke index 2 on the scorecard.

Player Quotes

Available later in the week.

2022 MyGolfLife Open hosted by Pecanwood In-Play Blog

12 March 2022, 8:05pm (UK time)

Du Plessis -19
Arnaus -17
Larrazabal -17
Elvira -17
Sterne -17
Five players tied -15

Hennie Du Plessis has extended his lead to two shots going into the final round of the MyGolfLife Open.

A third round 70 wasn't quite the fireworks we'd seen the first two days but firmer greens and tucked pins made scoring more difficult.  The local is now a best price 12/5 to convert and claim his first DP World Tour title.

As we mentioned in yesterday's blog, we're happy to oppose Du Plessis and despite having home support, we don't see him winning this.

Adri Arnaus (9/2), Pablo Larrazabal (6/1), Nacho Elvira (10/1) and Richard Sterne (12/1) are in the group at 17 under par.  Arnaus roared into contention with a Saturday 64 but he's disappointed too often in contention to back with any conviction.  If he wins, we won't regret passing up the 9/2.

Fellow Spaniards, Nacho Elvira and Pablo Larrazabal, are past winners on the European Tour and have their claims.  Both bemoaned their game in round 3 though and make no appeal at the odds.

Our 200/1 pre-event selection, Richard Sterne, recovered from a slow start (+2 through 2 holes) and joined the group in 2nd place with a closing birdie.  He has six European Tour wins to his name but the last of those came in 2013 and it's been over two years since he's been in contention in any event.  He'll need to draw on past experience to contend.

Julien Brun was another pre-event selection and we're hoping he can make a run at the title from the group at 15 under par.

Round 4 Bets

  • 0.75pts Each Way Romain Langasque 66/1 @ Boylesports (1/4 1-3)
  • 0.5pts Each Way Darren Fichardt 66/1 @ Boylesports (1/4 1-3)

If Du Plessis does slip up, the players further down the leaderboard have a great chance of posting a low score and stealing this.  Two players who are capable of fireworks are Romain Langasque and Darren Fichardt.  Langasque was five shots back going into the final round when he won the Wales Open in 2020.  A final round 65 that day saw him claim the title in Wales and he won't be fazed starting five back tomorrow.  He's only dropped one shot all week and were it not for a slow opening round, he'd be much closer to the leader.

Darren Fichardt is another who is capable of making birdies and is worth a smaller interest.  His last win, 2020 Betway Championship on the Sunshine Tour, came via a final round 64.  He's played the back nine in 15 under par this week, better than any one else, he just needs to get off to a faster start to post a strong score.

Du Plessis -17
T Strydom -16
Larrazabal -16
Elvira -16
Sterne -15
Cockerill -13

Local man Hennie Du Plessis leads the way at the halfway point at Pecanwood.  The South African lives one minute away from the course and has been putting his local knowledge to good use as he's recorded 16 birdies and an eagle so far.

Du Plessis is now 9/2 favourite but we're happy to oppose him given he hasn't won on any Tour since 2017.  That win came in a three round event and he needed a playoff to win after holding a two shot lead going into the final round.  There's enough quality behind him and with birdies plentiful, he won't have the luxury of pars to win this.

Pablo Larrazabal (5/1), Tristen Strydom (7/1) and Nacho Elvira (8/1) are the only others who have been priced up in single figures by the bookmakers.  Of the three, Elvira would be our favoured option.  A winner last year in Wales, he seemed happy with his game in his post round interview.

Conversely, Pablo Larrazabal wasn't as complimentary about his game and given his best results have come in higher scoring events, there has to be a question mark over whether he can keep the pace up.

Strydom has yet to win as a pro and although he's gone close recently (four runner up finishes in his last 15 starts), a win this week would be a significant step up in his career.

Our 200/1 pre-event selection, Richard Sterne, is nicely placed at 15 under par and we're hopeful he can make a move over the weekend.  He's playing nicely and indicated in his post round interview that he's played plenty of golf at Pecanwood.

We're in a good position going into the weekend. Three of our five pre-event selections are inside the top 20 and yesterday's two in-play selections, Aaron Cockerill and Brandon Stone, are inside the top seven.  We're adding one more selection.

Round 3 Bet

  • 1pt Each Way Jazz Janewattananond 35/1 @ 10bet/Sport Nation (1/4 1-4)

Jazz has fired consecutive rounds of 66 to find himself five shots off the pace.  He gave an interview last week which said he has struggled mentally with Covid. However, he appears to be emerging from those problems and three top 20 finishes in his last three starts indicates how strong his game is right now.  Interestingly, his last two career wins have come with a winning score of -23, so he's not afraid to go low over four rounds.  He's a multiple winner in Asia and narrowly missed out on a European Tour win last year in Kenya.  He's capable of winning and we want him onside.

Three players tied -8

A day of low scoring saw four players tie for the lead after the opening round of the MyGolfLife Open hosted by Pecanwood.

126 of the 156 players in the field finished their first round under par and 36 players are within four shots of the lead.

Ross Fisher finds himself as the 10/1 favourite with Pablo Larrazabal and Dean Burmester joint 2nd favourites at 12/1.  Burmester would be our preference out of the three players but with such a bunched field, we aren't in a huge rush to back anyone at those sort of odds.

Four of our five pre-event selections are inside the top 40 but we want to add two further plays.

Round 2 Bets

  • 1pt Each Way Brandon Stone 55/1 @ Unibet (1/4 1-5)

Brandon opened with a six under par 66 in round 1 and finds himself four shots off the pace.  A proven winner in South Africa, he's more than capable of getting himself into contention and crossing the finishing line.  It particularly interests us that he's shown he's able to shoot low scores to win tournaments, his wins at the Scottish open and Alfred Dunhill Championship coming when scores were better than 20 under par.  There's only one shot between Brandon and Wilco Nienaber and there shouldn't be such a price disparity.

  • 0.5pts Each Way Aaron Cockerill 80/1 @ Skybet (1/4 1-5)

Aaron finished 2nd last week in Kenya and continued his fine play with an opening 65 this week. He ranked 7th SG: Approach and 28th SG: Off The Tee in the opening round and that is enough to tempt us in. His two best career results have now come in Africa and it's clearly a part of the world he enjoys.  Take the 80/1 on him going one better than last week.
