Trends

This course is being used for the first time so we don't trends to analyse. This is likely to be a low scoring affair though.  Jeff Winther won last year's Mallorca Holf Open with a score of -15 but the three events held on resort courses in Gran Canaria and Tenerife in 2021 were won with scores of -25 or better.

Notable Quotes

"The course looks great, the greens look phenomenal, so I think it’s going to be a great week. I think there are a few holes that are quite tight but other than that it’s hammer all day. You’ve got short wedges in, I think the main thing this week is going to be spin control, because you’ve got a lot of wedges in your hand. It’s a short course and the par fives are reachable. It will be low scoring definitely.” Jeff Winther

"Course here in Mallorca looks fantastic ! Great shape ! Small targets ! Hard rough around the greens ! And I have NO IDEA how the scoring will be!" Mike Lorenzo Vera

Round 3 Summary

Yannik Paul shot a 62 to take a share of the lead going into the final round of the Mallorca Golf Open.  Having opened with a level par 71, the German is 16 under par for his last two rounds.  He was joined at the top by Ryan Fox.

Round 4 Weather

Sunny. Wind 10-15mph.

How do we expect the market favourites to perform?

Ryan Fox remains at the front of the betting for a 2nd day in a row and has shortened into a best price of 17/10.  The Kiwi may be 2nd in the SG: Tee to Green stats to Yannick Paul but his winning experiences in 2022 will be a huge advantage.  He was interviewed earlier in the week and spoke of the pressure being off and feeling more relaxed in contention.

Yannick Paul was 16/1 at the start of the day but has come into 9/4 after his 62 in round three. A runner up earlier this year at the Soudal Open, he's yet to win as a pro and that has to be a concern.  That said, his play the last two days has been exemplary and if he can continue that level of performance he'll go very close.  We can't back him at the odds though.

The English trio of Marcus Armitage, Dale Whitnell and Richard Mansell are all priced up between 10/1 and 12/1.  Mansell has disappointed on several occasions on the DP World Tour, most notably at the Alfred Dunhill Links a few weeks ago.  It was notable that he referenced working with a psychologist again in his post round interview and if he can learn from that experience he may well go close from off the pace.

Dale Whitnell will likely fare better now he's coming from off the pace.  Whitnell mentioned the fact it was his first time holding the solo 36 hole lead and that clearly affected him in the opening holes.  He's not for us at the odds though.

We opposed Marcus Armitage in round three and he didn't get the memo.  That said, he's performed better under pressure than Mansell and Whitnell and is preferred of the three.  It's been a case of Jekyll and Hyde for The Bullet so far this week and should he play like he did in rounds one and three he'll be in with a shout.

Where is the value?

The leaders may not have it all their own way tomorrow with a little more wind in the forecast. However, both leaders are bogey free over the last two days and a winning score of at least -18 is anticipated.

We have three pre-event selections and one in-play selection in the top nine and we're very much hoping for a low final round from one of our team.

Round 4 Bets

  • No bet

Rasmus Hojgaard was under consideration given the firepower he possesses.  Yannik Paul made three eagles in round three and Hojgaard is a player who could set up similar eagle opportunities.  However, 40/1 felt fractionally short and instead we're content to cheer on Jazz Jannewattananond, Nicolai Hojgaard, Renato Paratore and Hurly Long.

Round 2 Summary

Dale Whitnell shot a best of the day 63 to catapult himself to the top of the leaderboard and open up a one shot lead going into the weekend at the Mallorca Golf Open.

Round 3 Weather

Sunny intervals. Wind 5-10mph.

How do we expect the market favourites to perform?

Dale Whitnell might lead but it is Ryan Fox who is favourite at 13/5.  The Kiwi could easily have been a couple of shots better than his 64 in round two and he's definitely respected.  He leads the field in SG: Tee to Green through the first two rounds.  It wouldn't be a surprise to see him claim a 3rd win of the season.

Whitnell can be backed at a general 9/2 but he's not always impressed when in contention and we didn't give much thought to backing him at the odds available.

Rasmus Hojgaard is the only other player below 16/1 in the betting and can be backed at 11/2.  He'll be disappointed to have reached ten under par with seven holes left of his 2nd round before slipping back to -8.  He remains a threat though and is arguably a bigger danger coming from off the pace.

Where is the value?

With only three shots separating 6th and 36th positions, the top 10 market made some appeal.  However, we've opted for an outright and two ball selection.

Round 3 Bets

  • 4pts Andy Sullivan to beat Marcus Armitage (Mythical 2 Ball) Evens @ Skybet

Sullivan ranks 5th SG: Tee to Green for the opening two rouds whilst Armitage languishes in 61st in the same category.  The Bullet has been wayward off the tee so far this week and that puts him at a significant disadvantage.  Sullivan is the more accomplished player out of the two and we're more than happy to take the even money on a player who showed improvement in round two.

  • 0.5pts Each Way Alejandro Canizares 80/1 @ Unibet/Bet Rivers (1/5 1-4)

If Whitnell does slip up, Canizares finds himself only three shots off Ryan Fox.  His play has been solid through the opening two rounds, ranking inside the top 20 for SG: Tee to Green.  Canizares has been threatening a big finish since the European Masters and we're happy to take the Spaniard as an each way play at generous odds.

Round 1 Summary

Marcus Armitage was bogey free on his way to an opening round 63 and he enjoys a one shot lead over Daan Huizing.

Round 2 Weather

Sunny. Wind 8-12mph.

How do we expect the market favourites to perform?

Rasmus Hojgaard is the 4/1 favourite.  Given the way he's playing lately, it would be a shock to see the young Dane not fighting for the title on Sunday.  There's plenty of golf left though in this tournament and the 4/1 is a price we're in no rush to back.

Marcus Armitage can be backed at 13/2 but the price seems no more than fair and we're content to skip past him in the betting.  The Bullet was under consideration pre-event due to his performance last week at Valderrama, a course he normally struggles at.  However, the value is now gone and others are preferred.

Where is the value?

Andy Sullivan made appeal at 55/1 but we've got some promising positions with our pre-event bets so we're taking two players closer to the top of the leaderboard.

Round 2 Bets

  • 1.25pts Each Way Hurly Long 33/1 @ Unibet (1/5 1-5)

Long finished with four birdies in round one and should have momentum going into round two.  We liked him pre-event for this test but recent form was poor and that was enough to put us off before the start.  However, a promising opening 18 holes has brought his name back into the frame and we're happy to take 33/1.  He's a player we like to win on the DP World Tour soon and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him breakthrough this week.

  • 0.5pts Each Way Marc Warren 90/1 @ Unibet (1/5 1-5)

Warren has made four of his last five cuts which is eye catching in itself given he's not the most consistent player.  Amongst those finishes was an 8th place at the Open de Espana and he's now playing with a greater degree of freedom after virtually securing his playing privileges for next year.  He ranked 1st for Driving Accuracy in round one and if it weren't for a thinned bunker shot out of bounds on the par 5 11th hole, he would have been up with the leaders on the opening day.  His price reflects the fact he's an unpredictable player but he's a three time winner on Tour and shouldn't be underestimated if he gets in contention.
