-The Royal Golf Club, also named the Montgomerie Course, held their first DP Tour event in 2024 and also held the Volvo Golf Champions here in 2011. See below for details.-The Royal Golf Club course has undergone extensive upgrades, with a number of greens on the front nine having been redesigned.
2024 Bahrain Championship at The Royal Golf Club
Dylan Frittelli won with 13 under par in tough conditions. He ranked 1st tee to green, 3rd off the tee and 2nd approach. The top five all ranked inside the top 20 in tee to green stats so strong ball striking is hugely beneficial here.
He arrived following a T70 at Ras Al Khaimah and T41 in Dubai.
2011 Volvo Golf Champions at The Royal Golf Club
Stats don't exist for this event, which was won by Paul Casey on 20 under par. In tied 2nd place were accurate operators Miguel Jiminez and Peter Hanson on 19 under par, suggesting this course doesn't need to be overpowered.
2024 Bahrain Championship Course Quotes
“I played the practice rounds and the Pro-Am with like a one club wind at most and I thought this was going to be a birdie-fest. Then today when I stepped on the first hole I [realised] this was a lot tougher than I pictured in my mind. The rough is pretty long [and] you get some random lies in the desert. The pins today were pretty tough. They pulled out some tough ones as the wind wasn’t as high. I think tomorrow they will be a little safer with the pins. If we get more than 15mph winds then it is going to be a nightmare out there.” Dylan Frittelli
2011 Volvo Golf Champions Course Quotes
"Colin Montgomerie designed both the dramatic, championship 18-hole course and the stunning, Par Three 'Wee Monty' course at The Royal Golf Club, in association with European Golf Design. Both courses have been designed and constructed to provide an authentic links golf experience in the desert, with fast running fairways and open approaches to firm greens to promote the ground game.
Here, the desert wastes and dramatic wadi landforms entwine with and surround the pristine, paspalum fairways, giving the course a rugged, windswept dunescape. The greens are the focal point. Often dramatically large they are notable for their intricate, abundant contouring.
The ragged bunker styling gives the course the natural, eroded character one would expect of an exposed and often windy desert location. The back nine of the Montgomerie Course is floodlit; a first for the European Tour, which may come in handy on Sunday evening in the event of a play off." DP World Tour Website, 2011.
“The tour pros can’t afford to take liberties with Monty’s course and if the wind blows hard, as it often does on the island then they will have a real battle on their hands. The opening four holes played into the prevailing wind, is potentially the toughest opening stretch on tour. Equally, there are plenty of birdie opportunities, especially holes nine through 14. Par is historically a good round at the Montgomerie Course, so it will be fascinating to see the world’s best golfers take it on. For sure, they will find that the greens are amongst the most undulating ever seen on tour.” Robin Hiseman from European Golf Design, 2011
"I gave myself opportunities when I could find it. Luckily the course is generous in places and you can get away with it - I showed that." Paul Casey, 2011
"It’s beyond my wildest dreams that I could ever put two 69s back to back on this course the way it’s set up. I couldn’t sleep on Wednesday. I really thought I was going to shoot 90!" David Howell, 1999
How the weather should affect this week
Wind played a big part last week and looks set to blow again, especially Thursday and Friday. Players with ability in the wind should be considered.
